The first castle I ever saw, was right in my own backyard. I was about 6, when we passed by “The Kentucky Castle” near the little city of Versailles. It was love at first sight, as I imagined a magical princess sauntering through the halls in a sparkling pink tutu dress. Immediately, I begged my parents to turn the car around so I could take a peak inside.
My fantasy was brought to an abrupt halt, when my dad explained the enchanted castle was unfinished, and left abandoned. The original owners were inspired after returning from a romantic tour of historic European castles, but the massive undertaking was too much for their shaky marriage. After years of sitting vacant, it was finally finished as a boutique hotel, allowing guests to spend the night living like royalty.
Luckily, you don’t have to risk your relationship with your significant other for the chance to slumber in one of the real European fortresses. Since our fascination with imperial living has grown like crazy, its inspired owners of remaining historic homes across Europe to open their doors to curious travelers. Platforms like Airbnb have made it a snap to book, and enjoy some of the most extraordinary properties in existence.
Here are the 15 best Airbnb castles for rent that you can find all across Europe. Many of the best ones are found in France and Italy (obvi I’m biased), but there are several astounding properties just a hop, skip and a jump from other popular European hotspots. And if you’re new to Airbnb, you can snag a free (and rare) $40 towards your first booking with this link! Enjoy!
