We all have that dark room in our home that we wish got a little more natural light. After having our trees trimmed recently, I realized how much more light it added to all the rooms! It got me wondering: What are some other easy ways to make a room feel brighter?
If you have a dark room with small windows, or a small room that does not get much natural light, these simple tips will help you make the most of the space!
These dark room hacks will give the illusion of more light and make any room feel more open and airy!
#1. Brighten Your Floors With A Light Colored Rug
If you have dark flooring, the fastest way to brighten up this part of your home is with a rug! Cover up dark wood, dark tile, or a dark colored carpet with a light colored rug!
Ivory, Creams, Beiges, and Light Gray rugs can instantly transform a dark room, making it feel more open and airy. Just be sure to get the right size for your space!
#2. Use Reflective Surfaces Like Mirrors & Metallics
Did you know that adding reflective surfaces like mirrors and metallic finishes help reflect light in the space? This trick will make a dark room feel brighter, and can even make a small room look bigger than it is.
Look for large mirrors with a simple metallic frame, and place them across from the source of light for maximal reflection. You can also use metallic and mirrored end tables to help give a similar effect.
#3. Make The Window Look Bigger Than It Really Is
A simple change in your drapes can create the illusion of a bigger window and make the room feel even brighter! Opt for white, or light colored curtains, and hang the curtains rod higher and wider than the window frame.
All you have to do is let the drapes fall to the side of the window, which will create the effect of a wall with a much larger window than the one that is there!
#4. Add Accent Lamps Or A Crystal Chandelier
Don’t just rely on an overhead light to brighten a dark room! Another way to make a dark room feel brighter is to add more lighting to the space.
An easy thing to do is add accent lamps or a floor lamp, and place the near a light colored wall. White lamp shades are a must for making the space feel even more open!
You can also swap a basic ceiling mounted light fixture light with a crystal chandelier to reflect more light in the space. And bonus, a sparkly fixture will also draw your eye up making a room feel bigger! Use this guide to help pick the right size!
#5. Use A Door With Glass Windows
The final tip to add brightness to a dark room is to swap out the door for one with glass windows.
We noticed the previous owners of our home did this for our finished basement. It not only makes any space look more high end, but this trick also lets in much more natural light!
Is it a space where you need privacy, like a bedroom? Try a door with frosted glass to keep the coverage! French doors and sliding doors are a great way to elevate the look and add the light you’re missing!
